As per a police official, the Mumbai Police have booked a minimum of eight people for charges of alleged extortion and unlawful assembly, following a scuffle that broke out over attempts to take selfies with Indian cricket team member Prithvi Shaw. The incident reportedly took place recently, and the suspects have been charged in connection with their involvement in the brawl.

Based on the FIR lodged with the Oshiwara Police by a businessman and friend of Prithvi Shaw, the incident in question took place at a club located in a luxurious hotel in Vile Parle East during the early hours of February 16. As per the official, some of the suspects, who were allegedly trying to take selfies with the cricketer, surrounded him. While Shaw did comply with some requests, he denied others as the requests became too frequent and persistent. This reportedly led to the suspects crowding around him and causing a commotion.

According to official sources, a few of the suspects became agitated after being asked to leave the premises by the hotel manager. Subsequently, these suspects are said to have followed Prithvi Shaw as he was leaving the hotel and even pursued a car that they believed the cricketer was traveling in. However, it turned out that a friend of the cricketer was traveling in the car instead.

Reportedly, after giving chase to the car, a group of suspects caught up to it near Jogeshwari Link Road and proceeded to attack it using a baseball bat, causing damage to the vehicle. The suspects reportedly shattered the car’s windscreen during the altercation, according to police sources.

An official mentioned that in addition to the attack, the suspects also demanded a sum of Rs 50,000 from the victim, suspected to be an attempt at extortion in exchange for not filing a false case against the car occupant. Subsequently, the car’s occupant drove to the Oshiwara Police Station and filed an official complaint. Based on the complaint, the police have registered an FIR under the relevant sections of the IPC, and have booked a total of eight individuals for alleged unlawful assembly and extortion. As of now, two of the suspects, including a woman, have been identified by the police, who are continuing their investigation into the matter.
