Aadhar – PAN Card Linking: Govt Extends Deadline to June 30. Here’s How to Link!

The government on Tuesday extended the deadline to link Permanent Account Numbers like PAN with Aadhar Card by three months to 30 June 2023 from its earlier deadline of March 31, Whereby persons can intimate their Aadhar to the authority for Aadhar-PAN linking without facing any problems. As of March 28, more than 51 crore PANs have already been linked with Aadhar, the Finance ministry stated.

From 1st July 2023, the taxpayers who have failed to do PAN link with Aadhar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as

       (i) no refund shall be made against such PANs;
       (ii) interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during     
             which PAN remains inoperative; and
       (iii) TDS and TCS shall be deducted, at higher rate, as provided in
             the act.   

Step-by-Step Guide To Link Your PAN with Aadhar

1. Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ and click on “Link Aadhar”
2. Enter your PAN and Aadhar number and click “Pay through  e-Pay Tax”
3. Enter your PAN card number, confirm it, and enter your mobile number to receive an OTP and verify it.
4. Complete the payment and Enter your User ID,password, and date of birth to login your PAN details to verify with your Aadhar details.
5. When the details match, enter your Aadhar number and a message will appear to confirm the link of your Aadhar and PAN.

The linking of your PAN and Aadhar is required under current instruction.It will reduce the chance of having more than one PAN card. Linking Aadhaar with PAN helps to reduce fraud in the financial system. It helps taxpayers in filing their tax, once PAN and Aadhar are linked. By linking your PAN into Aadhar you are able to establish the uniqueness of your PAN card.

List of People Who Don’t Need to Do It

 1. Not a citizen of India
 2. A person who is the age of 80 years 
 3. Non-Resident Indians as per Income Tax Laws

How to Check PAN-Aadhar Linking Status Online

1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and click on “Quick Links” option.
2. You have to enter PAN and Aadhaar numbers and a pop-up message will be displayed.
3. If your PAN and Aadhar are not linked please click on “Link Aadhaar” to link it.
4. After that, please check the status by clicking on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ link on Home page.

How to Check PAN-Aadhaar Link Status Through SMS

For PAN – Aadhaar linking through SMS taxpayers have to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161. The message will read “Aadhaar is already associated with PAN,” if both are linked.

What Happens if You Fail to Link Your PAN with Aadhaar?

1. No refund shall be made against such PANs and your PAN will become nonfunctional.
2. Filing an ITR can become challenging and pending  returns will not be processed.
3. Tax deduction will be at a higher rate and proceeding cannot be completed.
4. As per Act 1961 TDS and TCS shall be collected at a higher rate.
5. If your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar the PAN card becomes inoperative after 1st July and you will have to pay Rs 1,000.
6. If you don't link your PAN with Aadhaar you aren't able to apply for a passport, opening a bank account and it may be problematic.
